Greeks and Romans

Despite having taught classics for over twenty years I'd never until recently read Kazantzakis' famous novel Zorba the Greek. Just finished it. An exhilarating read certainly and the 'hero' is a great creation, even though he embodies certain attitudes and values that some (particularly women?) might nowadays take a dislike to. The polarisation of the two different approaches to life - Zorba's wholehearted embracing of all types of experience as opposed to the narrator's contemplative approach perhaps seems a little simplistic? Nonetheless well worth reading and one can see why it has achieved classic status. Any comments on this or any other Classics related books? Adrian Lester
